A tour of Yves Saint Laurent’s childhood

YVES SAINT LAURENT grew up in Oran; between 1936-1954 in a residence which is located at number 11 of the street Stora on the plateau Saint-Michel; whose visit is henceforth possible.

It was in this residence that Yves Saint Laurent discovered his artistic, drawing and fashion talents.


was born on August 1, 1936 at the Jarsaillon clinic in Oran, Algeria. Son of Lucienne Andrée WILBAUX and Jules Charles.

He graduated from the Pasteur high-school and gone to art school in Oran.


St. Laurent Residence

He grew up in Oran with his two sisters Michèle and Brigitte; between 1936-1954 in a residence located at number 11 rue Stora on the Saint-Michel plateau; which can now be visited.

It is in this residence that Yves Saint Laurent discovered his artistic talents, drawing and fashion.

The « Paper dolls »

He would cut out the silhouettes of his favorite models from his mother’s magazines. Creating an entire wardrobe for them out of paper.

They were models that I cut out of the newspapers and then dressed them. I was 14, 15 years old… I played the great couturier.


In 1950, his first theatrical experience gave birth to a passion for the theater. Accompanied by his mother, they attended a performance of Molière’s L’École des femmes. Thereafter, Yves Saint Laurent built his “Illustrious Little Theater” with cardboard characters and created costumes for them.
